Good gloves protect your hands and last for years. Cheap ones fall apart and leave your knuckles sore. Here is how to choose the right pair in South Africa without overspending.
Pick the right weight
- 12oz — bag and pad work, lighter sessions
- 14oz — the all-rounder most members buy first
- 16oz — sparring and heavier training
Material matters
Genuine leather lasts longest and moulds to your hand. Quality synthetic leather is a great-value alternative. Avoid the cheapest PU gloves — they crack and smell within months.
Fit and care
Gloves should feel snug with a hand wrap on. Air them out after every session and never leave them in a hot car or sealed bag. Looked after, a good pair lasts years.
